Artist’s Statement

The artist’s main theme which runs through his work is a process of breaking down and reconstructing forms or landscapes that suggests a sense of metamorphosis and movement (see “Precession II”, 2015). The imagery is drawn from real situations, places, and figures in landscapes. In today’s world where everything seems to be binary and vertical, the artist is looking for more lateral connections between us and the world.

Hugh has always worked in a variety of media, e.g. slate, canvas, paper, and metal.

Elements of Hugh’s work are clearly influenced by the cubism of Braque and Picasso, where one is seeing more than one point of view at any time. Further, the improvisation and dynamics are seen in Jackson Pollock’s work, the metamorphic objects of Bill Woodrow’s sculptures, and Richard Long’s poignant Stone Circles are particular inspirations in Hugh’s approach to his work.
